Abtahi offers condolences to new UAE ruler

LONDON, Nov 6 (IranMania) - President Mohammad Khatami's senior advisor, Mohammad Ali Abtahi in a meeting with new UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahayan, offered condolences over the death of the state's leader.

Iran's Foreign Ministry's Director General for Persian Gulf affairs Hossein Sadeqi and several officials of UAE were also present in the meeting, IRNA reported.

Iran's Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref attended the funeral of the late UAE president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahayan on Wednesday. Aref too conveyed condolences from Khatami and the Iranian nation to the new ruler.

Sheikh Zayed, 86, had ruled over the United Arab Emirates since its foundation in 1971. He died Tuesday after a long illness.

Zayed was buried Wednesday in a private funeral ceremony attended by family members and selected government officials.

Leaders and representatives from several countries were in the emirate to pay their respects.
